Kettle & Quire Books

Kettle & Quire is two shops in one building: a bookstore that opens at nine to a handful of regulars and the occasional lost tourist, and an event space that fills up three nights a week with folding chairs, a sign-in sheet and someone's book to sell. The same shift can ask you to remember a customer's granddaughter's name and, four hours later, ring up a line of forty people before an author reaches the mic. Staff is mostly students, which means the schedule bends around exams, and the person training you may have started three weeks before you did.

Who you work with

The same people, shift after shift. Nobody here is the villain and nobody is always right.

Noreen

Owner-manager

Ran the shop for eleven years and does the register, the events calendar and the payroll herself. Warm to customers, blunt with staff, and always doing the math on whether tonight's event pays for itself.

Davion

Senior student staff

Third year, has worked here longer than anyone but Noreen and knows the stockroom better than the inventory system does. Picks up more shifts than he should because rent went up in August.

Wren

Coworker

Started this term, quiet until she's not, and studying for a biology degree that leaves almost no slack for anything else. Says yes to shift swaps until suddenly she can't anymore.

Abram

Regular customer

Retired, in most mornings around ten, buys maybe one book a month and talks for twenty minutes about all of them. Lonelier than he'd ever say, and it shows in how long he lingers.
