The four-paragraph structure

Keep it under 250 words. Managers of small workplaces read on their phone between tasks.

• 1. Why this job, this place — name something specific about them.
• 2. What you bring — your two strongest pieces of evidence.
• 3. What you know about the demands — early starts, weekends, standing, allergens, cash.
• 4. A clear close — your availability and one polite ask for a conversation.

Be specific or don't bother

"I am passionate about your company" tells them nothing. "I've been coming in on Saturdays since you opened and I've noticed the line builds between 9 and 11" tells them you actually pay attention — and that you'd understand the shift you're applying for.

Applying in person or by message

For cafés, shops, sites and salons, walking in at a quiet hour still works better than any portal. Go mid-afternoon, not mid-rush. Ask for the manager by name if you know it, give them a printed résumé, and say one clear sentence about your availability.

• Never during the lunch rush or the last 30 minutes before close.
• Dress the way their staff dress, one notch tidier.
• Follow up once after five working days. Once — not three times.
