Welcome to Harrow Plain, population 9,300 across the district. The co-op yard, the grain store and the machinery dealership sit together at the crossroads, and for eight weeks each year during harvest this quiet place runs eighteen-hour days. This district is made up of family farms, contract crews, seasonal pickers and packers, agronomists, hauliers and the businesses that keep all of that fed and fuelled. Work is dictated by weather forecasts more than by schedules: rain at noon means every crew wants feeding at eleven, and a broken-down harvester rearranges four people's days. Employment is heavily seasonal, so new staff arrive in waves and are trained fast, sometimes on their first morning. What is valued here is judgement under time pressure — knowing what can wait until tomorrow and what genuinely cannot, because tomorrow the field may be too wet to enter.
