Long distances, few people, deep trust
Welcome to Elder Valley, population around 2,100 spread across forty miles of road. There is no town center here in the usual sense — there is a crossroads with a fuel stop, a feed store, a community hall and the café, and everything else is farms, small farms and a scattering of houses up the side roads. This valley is made up of people who fix things themselves because the nearest specialist is an hour away, and who help each other because one day it will be their tractor, their frozen pipe, their emergency. Work here is often part-time, seasonal or several jobs stitched together. Deliveries are late, signal drops out, and the nearest backup staff member lives twenty minutes down the road. What that builds is resourcefulness: you learn to make a decision with the information and the people you actually have, not the ones the procedure assumes.
