Welcome to Northgate Rise, population 26,000 and adding roughly 2,000 people a year. Ten years ago this was farmland; now it is estates, a new health center, a elementary school on its second expansion and a shopping plaza where half the units opened in the last eighteen months. This suburb is made up of young families priced out of the city, older residents downsizing, and workers who commute out in the morning and want everything else on their doorstep in the evening. Almost nobody here has deep roots, which means routines are still being invented: your workplace may not have a settled way of doing things, your regulars are still becoming regulars, and the person asking you a question may be genuinely new to the area rather than testing you. Businesses grow and change staff fast, so the people who can explain a process clearly to someone who has never done it become valuable very quickly.
